Sears uses sales trends from online sales to start actively recommending bundled items or services.

“Sears Generations” begins here to move from selling products to selling the job to be done. Beginning with the appliance line. These are some of the largest purchases a millennial will make. They are more mobile and more temporary. Furniture and appliances do not appeal as much as the ability to sit and get work done. The rise of sharing has primed the generation to be comfortable without ownership.

Imagine signing a contract with Sears for washing and drying, rather than a washer and dryer. In this way, Kenmore can build machines that are designed to last 3-5 years then be returned and upcycled. This completely redesigns the supply chain for Sears, as it simultaneously repositions the company to be a market leader in green innovation. Similar to the solar announcement, Sears can announce a plan like this in the near term and reap credibility benefit right away.

Once Sears has committed to improving the American life, partners will step forward to help them accomplish their goals. By the midterm, Sears is already synonymous with energy, and power because of the solar initiative. They are again known for their commitment to quality through partnerships with best quality brands.

In the midterm, Sears will want to identify and promote individual benefit initiatives powered by their store’s leaders as well as one or two bold, long-term initiatives to commit to company-wide.

Imagine a new online Rosenwald school where teens can complete their high school diplomas online, and intern in retail or product development, powered by Sears.
